In our technology driven and digital world, it’s easy to think that our influence is measured by likes, shares, or the speed of our internet connection. But often overlooked is a powerful, yet simple, tool for impact, deeply rooted in our faith: personal presence.
What exactly is personal presence? It's more than just showing up. It's about being fully engaged and attentive, radiating genuine interest, and fostering connection. It's the subtle art of making others feel seen, heard, and valued just by being in the room. We often think that making a difference in people’s lives or even adding to the growth of the church requires complicated understanding and communication, but the truth is just your presence can make a tremendous impact on others.
Think about how Jesus exemplified this. He didn't just teach from a distance; He walked among the people, sharing meals, listening to their struggles, and healing their afflictions. His divine presence transformed lives. And we, as His followers, are called to reflect that.
Consider these scriptures:
1 John 4:7-8 (NKJV): "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." Our presence, filled with love, reflects God's own nature.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV): "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." Being present means setting aside our own distractions to genuinely focus on others.
Matthew 25:35-40 (NKJV): Jesus speaks of ministering to "the least of these" by feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, and visiting the sick. These acts require our physical presence and our intentional engagement.
The impact is profound. A personal presence, steeped in Christ-like love, builds stronger relationships within our church family and community. It can help to encourage trust, enhance communication, and can significantly amplify our influence for good. It's a reminder that even in a world obsessed with screens, the most impactful connections are often forged in the simple, yet powerful, space of being truly present with one another.
So, the next time you're interacting with someone, try turning off the distractions, making eye contact, and truly listening. You might be surprised by the quiet, yet profound, impact of your own personal presence, reflecting the very heart of God.
